The Alaska Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) announced on Facebook that the directions of Northern Lights and Benson Boulevard, both one way streets, have been reversed.
D.O.T. employees worked through the night flipping the directions of the one-way signs along these two streets, baffling morning commuters on their way to their favorite coffee huts. D.O.T. released a statement explaining the change. “This project is the first in a series we are calling ‘Keeping Anchorage Attentive’, in which established traffic patterns are changed without warning to increase driver alertness levels and combat rising vehicular accidents across the city.” The statement continues, “the most effective way to increase attention on the road is to keep all drivers on their toes. You can’t swipe on Tinder while also reading road signs!”
One morning commuter shared that they narrowly avoided seven cars traveling the wrong way on Benson. Despite this, they expressed support for the change. “Who cares if there are a few more accidents than normal as people get used to the reversed directions? I am seeing Midtown in a whole new light! Who knew that the other side of the Taco Bell looked like that?!”
At press time, a group of D.O.T. employees were spotted loitering around the one-way signs on A and C Street.
