Dear Calling Nome,
My roommate is going through a debilitating break up and I’m running out of ways to cheer her up. Jumping into leaf piles, reorganizing our tupperware drawer, and running the Klondike Road Relay have all fallen short. Any other suggestions?

Dear Ruminating,
Distractions are truly the saving grace of all break ups. Especially with winter right around the corner, the time for picking up and promptly dropping hobbies is now. Whether it’s learning to work a loom or practicing Italian conjugations, those in heartbreak will turn to just about anything rather than confront their own feelings. I think you’re on the right track, but just need to dig into even more involved and complex activities.
Some recent favorites of mine include organizing a months-long Settlers of Catan tournament, making sense of Anchorage’s housing policies, writing and illustrating your memoir, and learning how to play the dulcimer. And if all else fails, planning elaborate revenge plots will really get your roommate feeling like herself again (nothing says ‘I’m well adjusted and happy’ quite like arranging a trail of salmon from a bear’s den to her ex’s house).
Stay diligent, Calling Nome
